In the summer of 1963 my mother returned to her hometown of Pittsburgh after separating from my father. I was in tow. As she looked for a new home for us I stayed with my cousin and his family. It was a wonderful experience in so many ways. For one thing it was a large house and not a small apartment, and there were plenty of people running all around. There's one aspect of that family life that not only remains with me but I return to it every so often. Every evening as my aunt did her homemaking chores and the rest of us played games or occupied ourselves as normal kids do, the radio played music from the AM station on the kitchen counter....and everyone....young and old....enjoyed the popular songs of the day. This music was the ever present background of our lives...and we all shared it. The same situation existed with the movies. Everyone would go together, especially to the drive-ins.
We were all nothing if we were all not Americans. We thought alike. By that I mean that we used the same problem solving measures. Everyone agreed on what was good and was bad and what was evil. Oh, yes there were political differences but most liked our president even if they wouldn't have voted for him again. There was a divide in our religious beliefs but it was hardly noticeable in our every day lives even though atheist activists were beginning to make headway in our Supreme Court. We were a God-fearing people....and a patriotic people....as if one of us sneezed the whole nation would say God bless you. Please allow me to ignore in this post the exceptions that did exist and will exist in any population of 189 million people such as we were.
Something horribly changed right about that time. President Kennedy's assassination, looking back on it, was a sign...the days of wine and roses were over for America. Coincidentally, the Andy Williams song of that name was playing on that kitchen counter radio all summer, and the film of the same name was gathering awards. We have been in a steady decline since then....53 years ago. We are no longer one people. We no longer think alike or reason alike. We are no longer God-fearing, and we are making our own plans...following our own dreams....all the while forgetting God!
Jeremiah had prophesied judgements against Judah for many years...judgements that would come by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, and that was just what was happening, but a certain Hananiah rebuked Jeremiah and prophesied that within only two years the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar would be broken and that God would make Judah....great again. Jeremiah had placed a wooden yoke on his own back symbolizing what Judah would go through. Hananiah..."in the presence of all the people"...dramatically took that yoke off Jeremiah and broke it declaring that God would soon break the yoke of Babylon. God then gave Jeremiah a rebuke to give to the false prophet....."You have broken the yokes of wood, but you have made in their place yokes of iron.......Listen now Hananiah! The LORD has not sent you, and you have made this people trust in a lie."
With Donald Trump's election... we... many of us...the rest have even less concern with God's hand upon us... are confident that America will soon be restored to what it was...even greater...but we have not returned to God...nor have we even consulted Him. We believe our own dreams over His Word which indicates that a nation such as we have become....a nation that once reverenced God but now openly rebels against Him.... will have not a wooden yoke...but an iron yoke placed upon it. My point in this is certainly not against Donald Trump...for I celebrated his win....nor in what he is attempting to do....but rather this; though removing from government those hostile to our heritage and our constitution may have been a necessity, it is not related to how we became the irreligious people that we are nor indicative that we have in any way humbled ourselves, repented, or even sought God's mercy.
