The Stimulus

Every Republican Congressman (woman) voted against the "Stimulus Bill," and a few Democrats joined them (unfortunately, not my own, Jason Altmire.) There are so many things wrong with this legislation. The method they are using in trying to pass it is a sham. President Obama says "We don't have a minute to lose.". This is becoming the standard line in eliminating a legitimate debate and time for all Americans to review a bill. The bill is filled with "pork." Money would go to some absurd places, and every time it is brought up in the news, the money is withdrawn (not a moment to lose!). The theory behind the bill is not only, not accepted by many, it is refuted as another FDR moment that did not work the first time.
What would the bill do as it stands now? It might get votes from constituents, for one or two elections. It would create 600,000 Federal jobs. A Stimulus is needed but it will take time and all Americans need to know the specifics with time enough to consider it. Reverting to some thoughts from a previous blog, There are other issues that come into play in the stimulus. Chinese and Russian leaders spoke out this week at Davos. They are not happy with capitalism, go figure! We are joined at the hip with China's success and disposition. There are other variables that could thwart even a good stimulus. Other leaders at Davos are saying that the crisis can be used to bring full economic power into the hands of governments. The enormous issues we face go further than our paychecks, they extend into the lives of our children. These Davos leaders may just have miscalculated a little bit. There is the possibility that the crisis may awaken Americans from our slumber and begin, once again, to analyze world political and economic issues and elect representatives accordingly. Lord willing, for we do not know what a day brings, the next election (2010) may upend the applecart that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are pushing.
