It will be five-hundred years next October 31st that Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the Castle Church door in Wittenberg thus beginning the Reformation! Gee...500 years...another round number that God used to give us a clue as to the day and age that we live in! The America of promise is no more....the past age is no more. I don't know half of my fellow American citizens anymore. I see evidence of it often....I meet a friend....we talk....from initial appearances they are as normal as normal can be. We talk some more but there is something wrong...they know everything about the weather and the sports teams and body aches and pains and how to treat them. Their vocabulary is fine and their speech has perfect diction. It's when politics or world affairs enter into the conversation that a very discernible problem arises. They have never heard of this or have no idea of that. Their opinions are foreign to common sense, logic and reason. Their grasp of American history is skewed, their compassions twisted, and their concepts of good and evil grossly distorted if identified at all.
As artificial intelligence advances, human intelligence retreats into snapshot descriptions and sound-byte comments. We now live only in the present. There is no past worth mentioning. The future exists solely in some financial advisers vague but profitability projections. I'm left essentially speechless in these conversations, for when I do offer bits and pieces of valid but negative information an alarm device kicks in and they recoil at my thoughts.
The ghost of America hovers above the carcass. That once dreaded 'C' word ...communism... invaded the soft underbelly of American society and ravaged the tissues mercilessly. As a nation we have lost strength and influence, our defenses are weakening, and the pain of violence everywhere is everyday numbed by the opioids provided by our entertainment and news industries. It's when these pain relievers are removed that the mere discomforts now experienced will morph into torments.
The Gospel is no opioid. The pain will remain and is present now as all of creation and all who long for the righteousness of Christ to rule on the earth groan and long for His return in power and glory, for "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying. nor pain anymore..." Friends...as violence wracks this world as never before and portends even greater calamity ....is Christ's return not what we should yearn for?
A heart still beats in America....in its honorable and courageous military that continues to answer the call....in its first responders being called upon more and more...in loving responsible parents...and in people rich and poor, young and old, of all ethnic origins, who know that there is something terribly wrong in our country. They may pray and they may not. They may be confident that this can be turned around or they may be like me who believe that we are beyond turning around without a national repentance, nor should we even want to return to the America of the last half of the twentieth century. May God have mercy on us for His glory alone as a cataclysmic unravelling is already bringing chaos to every stratum of our society.
