Why Richard Harris wasn't nominated for Best Actor in the 1971 film Cromwell I don't know. Then again why Stephen Lang wasn't nominated as Stonewall Jackson in 2003's God's And Generals also eludes me. I'm not privy to that type of information. If the Cromwell score were not so overly dramatic after every important phrase....(and the score was nominated for an Academy Award)....it would probably be among my top three favorite films....along with Chariots Of Fire and The Winslow Boy (1999)....two other British films.
The film begins with a righteous diatribe by Oliver Cromwell in his home as one of the Puritans leaders wagered that a civil war against the king was possible. Cromwell settled down enough in his opposition to such an idea to say....."You know not the ways of this nation Mr. Ireton....those things do not happen here."
What is happening in England right now is sad to watch....they have abandoned their God....and are in the process of abandoning their heritage.....but then we have our own similar troubles here in America. Cromwell continued to defend the king in the Parliament's uproar against him. At one point in the film.....I have no idea the historical accuracy of it.....Cromwell stood up in the same Parliament that Prime Minister Theresa May today survived a confidence vote and said...."I beseech you...do not condemn this king too quickly for I am persuaded he has been ill advised by this court....the fault lies with those very people with whom the king has sought council." Does that defense sound familiar? Cromwell soon saw that the problem was indeed with the king....who considered the ordinary people below capable of making decisions concerning governing the nation. Cromwell responded to the king's opinion in that these....ordinary people....would lay down their life for their king....and that ...."being....ordinary....they would prefer to be asked....and not told." He then went on to lead the Roundheads to victory. Cromwell's statue today stands outside that same House of Commons.
If we are to become engaged in a civil war once more in America it must this time....we pray....be waged on our knees. Our failure to go there to begin with is what has brought this strife upon us. We also today have government leaders who think the common man too ordinary to effect policy that defends our own nation. What they do not know.....nor care to consider....is that....as Michael Horton has written...."In providence, God's ordinary way of working, should surprise us with wonder."
Yes we are ordinary people....and one of God's 'ordinary' ways of awakening a nation is through prayer. Theologian J. I. Packer....an expert on the Puritans....was once asked about the Puritans as giants of the faith. His response was that it was not that they....the Puritans.....were giants....but that we today are Pygmies.
