We opened a Christian bookstore in our small town....this was twenty-some years ago. Charles Stanley....good man that he is....his books were not represented in the store....nor Charles Swindoll.....nor Dobson nor Pat Robertson....nor Frank Peretti.....nor any of the other popular Christian authors of the day....but only authors whose fundamental beliefs were rooted in the 16th century Reformation. MacArthur's books were there....and John Piper's....and Michael Horton's....and R. C. Sproul's and David Wells and Iain Murray....Banner Of Truth books....and Calvin and Luther and the Puritans. It was a bookstore more of....Reformation Theology.....which would include Luther....than just...Reformed Theology.
I had a radio commercial made....by and for playing on our local and powerful 50,000 watt Christian radio station. They were very helpful in developing the commercial. It began with the sound of nails being hammered....and then I mentioned Martin Luther posting his 95 theses on the church door at Wittenberg. I wince even now as I am reminded that I no longer have a copy of the commercial.
Many churches all across America will be celebrating....Reformation Day....as we call it....October 31....this Monday....the date on which Martin Luther started that great Reformation. We have a celebration at our church....but I never gave a thought to going....for I am just not into celebrating days like this....for we can fall into a pattern of celebrations and conferences....where time passes and that is all that we do....celebrate and talk about what others did.
These posts may not be worth much.....only God knows....but it's all I got folks....eyes to see people who need Christ....and young people living the same life of misplaced goals as I had lived a half century ago....ears to hear the same music of the night....the same stadium cheers....and the same endless laughter from TV sitcoms....and these posts to point people....young and old....to a trusted old path...and ministries such as those of Piper and Sproul and Horton and MacArthur....that can guide us like Bunyan's Great-heart....until our pulpits awaken....should God have mercy upon us to do so....to His glory....alone!
