The high temperature for the day was 41 and the low 36....and there was no precipitation. That was Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday....December 6, 1941. My father was twenty years old at the time....working at Westinghouse in East Pittsburgh. My mother was seventeen and in her last year of high school. They did not know each other on that date although my mother knew of my father because he was popular at the dances and roller skating rinks.
The next day of course was that day that would live in infamy. My father eventually joined the Army Air Corps....was stationed mostly in New Guinea....severely wounded by a Kamikazi attack....with burns that plagued him most of his life....died on the day that hostages were taken in Tehran....November 4, 1979....at fifty-eight years old....and is buried in Section 60 at Arlington National Cemetary.
He met my mother while recuperating at Braddock Hospital....after a long stay in a Cleveland hospital. They married in November of 1948....had me in February of 1950....separated....never to reunite but also never to divorce....in 1959....and my mother died at eighty-nine years of age in 2015.
So one day my father was roller skating....and the next thing he knew he was in the Pacific during World War II. Everyone living in those days has a story....and just about everyone's life was changed....eighty-three years ago tomorrow.
Two days before the day of infamy....our Secretary of War was responding to some leaks in the press about American military preparations. He was upset and asked this question...."What would you think of an America general staff which in the present condition of the world did not investigate and study every conceivable type of emergency which may confront this country and every possible method of meeting that emergency?"
There are many areas that I could go with that question....one being....on the FBI....'What would you think of an FBI who did not investigate every conceivable lead....on a man who very possibly could be the next president of the United States....and who had for decades been prime kompromat material for the Soviet Union?' Or this....
'What would you think of a pastor who would not warn his sheep about a man who had been flattering all Christians...because that man wanted the glory of the top job in the country.....but who was everything that the Apostle Paul told us to stay away from?' For that matter....what would you think about a friend of yours who knew that this same man was a genuine biblical false prophet....and also....as the Apostle John described....one of many antichrists sent out into the world....or that he knew that Jesus was near in His return....this because he has spent decades in serious and prayerful study....but was too concerned about losing you as a friend to tell you any of this?
