There have been various religious sects and organizations in the past that aligned themselves with the Rechabites of the Old Testament. A main teaching of these sects is that they do not imbibe alcohol in any form. Some of the temperance organizations used this biblical theme of the Rechabites....but alcohol....although a prominent topic in Jeremiah 35....was not the message that God was giving!
In the 35th chapter of Jeremiah....God told the prophet to go and gather the Rechabites in the Temple....and place cups and wine before them....and tell them to drink. Jeremiah would have known what the response from the Rechabites would be. They refused to drink any alcohol....because their patriarch....200 years earlier....had command them never to drink alcohol. (There were some other commandments also.)
God then told Jeremiah to go shame the people of Judah....because the Rechabites held firm to the command to abstain from alcohol....a command from a patriarch....and this 200 years previous....but Judah....given commands over many years to forsake their idolatry....and return to the LORD....and these commands given to them by God Himself....they ignored!
The Rechabites were not ethnically from the loins of Abraham....but they feared God....and lived among the Israelites....as nomads. The Jews had the temple....and all of the great teachers....while the Rechabites were a simple nomadic group that simply wanted....to stay away from temptations. So in today's terms....the Jews had all the pomp and circumstance....while the Rechabites were the simple and small....fundamentalist types....dotting the hills and the deserts..
I posted on this thought before....for to me....it is as if God looks at us....as we in turn look down upon all of the small country fundamentalist churches dotting the inconspicuous valleys and hollows and mountains....and Fundamentalism in general....for they are obviously not theologically educated as we are. But it is us....and our megachurches....and grand seminaries....and our cable television networks....and our lucrative merchandising....and our publishing houses....and our million man rallies....and our celebrities....and our clerics who regularly pray over a president in our White House....it is us....and not the 'Rechabite' fundamentalist....that did not remain vigilant....and it is us that compromised the gospel of salvation to fit in with the world....and us that elected a false prophet to be our leader....and us that has to have every entertainment under the sun.
God....through Jeremiah....gave a promise to those Rechabites that remained faithful to their fundamentalist principles and beliefs....that they would always have a place before the LORD. The fundamentalist of today....and over the past hundred years....might have to struggle to be awarded a Master of Divinity degree at a Reformed seminary....but they are strong on the fundamentals of the faith and salvation....and cautious to a fault....on the dangers of living in the world.
