The German language is remarkable in that it has a number of single words that can express whole concepts. One of those words that many are familiar with is zeitgeist. Merriam-Webster defines zeitgeist as..."The general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era." Unfortunately this word was used and possibly abused so much in our culture in the 60s and 70's that to those my age it has taken on a Hollywood flair. I subjected myself to a word association test.....zeitgeist.....Woody Allen is what came to my mind. Even the phrase 'spirit of the age' is too nebulous for most to seriously consider, but there is indeed a spirit of the age, which could be considered as zeitgeist, and the Apostle Paul took pains to describe one....quite possibly ours... in a letter to Timothy....
But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness but denying its power...." Friends...this sounds like a genuine zeitgeist to me!
Paul concluded this his second letter to Timothy with this warning...
"For the time will come when they will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires will accumulate teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear something new."
Candidate Donald Trump made this statement....."We will have so much winning that you will get tired of winning!" This is part of the zeitgeist. Facebook is part of the zeitgeist. Joel Osteen is part of the zeitgeist. Everything is about us.
