General Joseph Dunford is the current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He has a lot of generals reporting to him. He primarily reports to the President along with the Secretary of Defense who is General 'Mad Dog' James Mattis. He also reports to the White House National Security Adviser Lt. General H. R. Haldeman...er excuse me....McMaster. He also now reports to the new White House Chief of Staff General Kelly. He will report to a new Secretary of Homeland Security when they get one to replace General Kelly. Until then deputy secretary of homeland security Elaine C. Duke will be in charge. She's not for 'the wall' but she'll only be in there for a short time...probably.
Generals Eisenhower, Patton and Montgomery famously did not get along. There's a line in Ted Turner's Gettysburg where character Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain warns his brother Lt. Thomas Chamberlain with...."Generals can do anything. There's nothing so much like god on earth as a General on a battlefield."
Are all these generals going to get along with each other? Mad Dog Mattis seems to the big dog in the group but General Kelly is billed as somewhat of a big dog himself. Both Mattis and Kelly originally recommended each other for Secretary of Defense when initially interviewed by President-elect Trump. That seems good.....but still some individual has to ultimately be in charge...and that would be Donald Trump.
General Alexander Haig got in big trouble after President Reagan was shot while getting into an automobile on March 30th, 1981. General Haig...the then White House Chief of Staff... proclaimed to everyone in the Situation Room...essentially...."I'm in charge here," among some other interesting quotes.
So where is Steve Bannon in all of this...a measly former Lieutenant (0-3) in the navy? How does he react in a room full of generals? Folks, this may work out well, and then again it may not. All these generals may be outstanding leaders and outstanding men, but taking note of the number of generals in White House positions is not only not wrong....but should be done.
