Suppose.....suppose that Donald Trump was not the nominee back in 2016? Most likely....but not definitely....Hillary would have won and become president. She would have put two Supreme Court judges on the court. McConnell would not have fast-tracked Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The economy would have grown similarly had any republican become president. The pandemic would have happened on Clinton's watch....during the 2020 campaign. Presumably we would have had enough of Hillary....and a republican would have succeeded her....and put the third judge on the court....and then a fourth. There would be no President Joe Biden today. We have had a little over seven years of the Donald Trump show....with catastrophes everywhere from our intelligence agencies to impeachments and all the rest. Evangelicalism would not have been hijacked. Conservatism would be intact. Talk radio might still be relevant.
I never actually think this way....not in politics....nor in life. God's ways are perfect....and what has transpired in the past eight years is perfect in that God is in control of....everything! I only bring it up here to dispel some of the myths that Trump was so great. He campaigned on what we wanted....he applied for the position....we gave it to him....and he came through on some things that quite frankly....those judges for instance....there is no way that he could have done anything else.
We were hoping and some praying for a vaccine as people were dying during the pandemic. When that vaccine was announced we were thrilled and thankful....as we should have been. Trump literally blundered through the first few months of the pandemic....making decisions purely for political reasons. Fauci and all the others just rolled their eyes and tried to get through it all. Biden had the task of distributing the vaccine....and that changed our narrative 180 degrees....and gave an opening to the QAnon mentality for vaccinations.
The bottom line for the Christian is that politics and governments and military strength are not and have never been our answer. There are warnings and condemnations throughout the Old Testament on relying on ourselves and not on God. Gideon's army was dwindled down to almost nothing....and Moses had to have his arms held up....to demonstrate that it is not us.....it is God.....that saves us.
We have not learned our lesson. If the pulpits do not step up and warn the congregations....evangelicalism will continue under the spell of political power and might....primaries and demagoguery....for the next fifteen months....should the Lord of Glory tarry that is....and that is no longer looking likely. All praise and honor to Him who has promised that He will return....and has given us enough light to see the time that we live in....if we would only look....and not only to see but to hope for and even plead for His return!
