You are troubled! You want God at one moment....and then you are mad at Him....and then you want Him again? This has been going on for a while. What more could God want? You came to Him and demanded of Him that if He was real then He should somehow make Himself known to you....but He never did. You even pleaded with Him....but nothing worked!
So you decide to get back at God. You tell anyone who might be listening in your mind...that you are done looking for this God. That will show Him! The responsibility is no longer yours....any sane person could see that....but you are as troubled as you ever were....and probably even more so.
Or....or....you do the opposite? Instead of telling God that He has to make Himself known to you....instead of being on the defensive....you tell Him that you have nothing....nothing to commend yourself....and nothing to offer to change....nothing within you with which to even make a promise! You lay there defeated....destitute....with no hope....you cannot even get up for your legs are useless....and then something happens!
A man speaks to you....from somewhere? Is there a pulpit there....or a TV....where is the voice coming from. You have heard this man before....and you never liked him....but this time....instead of looking for an exit.....or the remote....you cup your ears as if to hear better what he is saying. He says that every man has sinned against God....and lies there in defeat....destitute. You want to shout out...."Yes! That is me!" There is a shadowy figure there. He says....look to Jesus and you will be saved....run to the light and you will be healed. You listen to every word that he says....and then he disappears....but behind where he was is a light....and you run to it....shouting...."Life! Life! Eternal Life!
The following is one of the last sermons that John MacArthur gave....before crossing the river....but it may be one of the best that he ever gave. In this instance....concerning you....he can be that shadowy figure....if you feel yourself destitute....if you are finally humbled....or....you can just 'X' out of this post....and regret that you ever came here.
