There are two developments in the conservative's reaction to Donald Trump that you may miss if they are not pointed out. In the first....it's pretty much acknowledged now that Donald Trump is not a truthful person.....and that in itself is an understatement. Congressman Issa was asked about this in a roundabout way and he fluffed it off with...."There are some things in politics that you just take for granted." Steve Bannon was interviewed on an Israeli news site and asked the same thing. His answer was that this was Donald Trump's..."style." The reporter doubled-down on the question and again Steve Bannon said that this was Donald Trump's style. If you look closely you can see the same hedging in conservative talk radio....these hosts know full well what Donald Trump's 'style' is. What's disconcerting about this is that if they continue obfuscating this issue then in time it may also be their....style.
The second development is that in the many egregious backslidings and outright mistakes by President Trump over the past year plus that we are starting to explain them away as simply being part of his brilliant step-by-step strategy. Amanda Carpenter's recently published book....Gaslighting America, Why We Love It When Donald Trump Lies To Us....tackles Donald Trump's lying head on. Geopolitical and economic analyst Jim Rickards...although not finding a problem with it.... gave a similar step-by-step analysis of what he thinks that Donald Trump is doing. I'm going to give my own description....he purposely says something outrageous....sees the reaction and backs off....then sees the defense given by his conservative supporters particularly on talk radio who defend him on anything and everything.....then he doubles-down on his initial statement......then claims victory in the resulting maelstrom as everyone calls him brilliant.
North Korea is a case in point. President Trump was put in an impossible situation. North Korea had to be dealt with or they would eventually have nuclear-tipped missiles on submarines just off of our shores. He brought an incredible armada to the waters around North Korea.....at a considerable cost.....and the world waited with baited breath. Then the President had a better idea.....he would use his magical deal making skills in a summit....not only did he regrettably meet with Kim Jong-un alone before the official meeting began but it is reported that he parlayed with Ivanka and Jared instead of his expert advisers first! The result is that Kim has been given more time while his standing in the world has improved. It'll now be more difficult than ever to confront him. And where is our armada.....just sitting around.....sent off to other places in the world......I don't know. This whole thing started off good but turned out to be a total botch-job....but we conservatives merely apply the now famous step-by-step to all of this....and wait for the next brilliant maneuver.
Christians.....we still remember....do we not....that on November 8 of 2016 that many of us were so happy that we had a Christian as president who would finally tell the truth and fight for things that are right? Well we now know....or should know....that that was a bunch of nonsense.....but will we at least acknowledge this unfortunate situation....that Donald Trump does not deal in truths.....but that his concept of truth is subject to the deal he is trying to make....or are we also headed to where telling the truth is not necessary....and that results are all that count?
