Billy Graham tells this version of an old joke. A tourist visits New York City and is having a hard time locating Carnegie Hall. Finally he stops a bearded beatnik on the street and asks him..."Sir, how can I get to Carnegie Hall?" The man snaps his fingers a few times and says...."Practice man...practice!"
I'll try a different thread. A man walks up to a preacher and asks..."How do I get to heaven? The preacher looks at him and says...."Turn around." The man then asks...."Turn around and what?" to which the preacher's reply is...."Just turn around....God will do the rest."
Some of the definitions offered for the word 'repent' are.....change your mind....turn back....or turn away from. Regret and remorse are also mentioned. Acts 3:19 says..."Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out."
The command 'about, face' is a difficult drill in the military. You have to turn your right foot and plant the toe just right....then swivel and somehow make it an exact 180 degree turn...with the heels of both feet landing in the correct position.
It was September 19th of 1972. I had earlier in the day ended my time of service in the army....packed up my MG with the top down.....put on a blue and white polka dot cap.....and headed north from Fort Bragg, North Carolina. I was loaded down, traveling slow, and it was sunny and hot! By the time I reached the Pennsylvania Turnpike I was beat. I headed west from the Breezewood interchange.....or was I headed east? I turned around on the median strip and went a few miles. Something wasn't right so I crossed the medium strip again and turned around. I should have just went to the nearest service area and took a catnap but I thought it over....and turned around again!
If your heart is not filled with praise and thanksgiving to Jesus Christ then at the very least you can take heart in the veracity of this directive......you must turn around....for you're going the wrong way. In John Bunyan's classic Pilgrim's Progress, 'Christian' knows that he is living in the City of Destruction and runs towards to light shouting "life, life, eternal life!" He's met by two acquaintances from his own City of Destruction who tell him to turn around and go back. He continues forward. He falls into the muck and mire of the slough of despond along with a fellow pilgrim who does turn back. Christian turned aside a couple of times in his pilgrimage of life which got him in trouble but he never turned back!
Some of you reading this saw my bumper sticker and that's why you are here. Turn around friend.....change your mind....you don't have things under control....your going the wrong way. Turn around and God will do the rest. What do I mean by that? You will pick up the Bible and begin to read. God will have put that thought in your mind. You will research....you will pick a Christian and ask questions......you will make appropriate decisions. God will have directed you and given you the strength to follow through.
I chose not to offer advice in this post on what specifically to do other than this....change your mind....turn around. Why? Because I knew that someone....you....someone who needs to turn around....would stumble across this post.
