"And do not become idolaters as were some of them. [in the wilderness with Moses] As it is written, 'the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.' " 1 Corinthians 11:7 NKJV
This is by far not the first post that I have ever done on this subject. I just believe that it is important enough to keep bringing it up.
To most Americans....walk out of your home....in the morning or afternoon or early evening....and s.troll around....maybe even in town....and there is not a care in the world. The birds will be singing....lawn mowers will be running....and children will be playing and laughing here and there. A man might be washing his car with music playing by him....or a woman pulling weeds from between the Hydrangea and the Hosta.
The television shows are the same....as are the magazines....whether they are sports or women's magazines. There is always a movie to go to see or a concert or a professional game of any one of a number of sports.
The conversations are the same....bad knees and new diets and so-and-so whose husband left them and the weather and the next vacation. Church is the same....if one goes to church....with more smiles. There's mom or dad who should not be driving anymore....or a child who just drives too fast from stop sign to stop sign....and there is the eldest daughter or the second eldest son who are getting married....which will take up all the free time in preparation until that big day comes.
There is absolutely nothing unexpected about this situation....for in that great chapter in Matthew.....twenty-four....verses thirty-eight and thirty-nine....Jesus described the time of His return as....in the days of Noah....not the Lancaster Sight & Sound production....but the real Noah...."For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and there were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man."
I could make this sound genteel....while slowly describing the problem....but I'm not....for there is really little time.....even if Jesus tarries a few years....there is little to no time to waste. So I will pick the Steelers....it could be the Browns or the Dodgers or Golf or this hobby or that hobby....but I'll pick the Steelers because I know this problem....in fact I used to be part of this problem. If your desires are more on a professional team of any sport....meaning you follow them daily for most of the year....for decades on end....and you are more interested in them than Jesus Christ....the Lord of Glory....coming back in vengeance and judgment....with the whole world ablaze....than you just will not discern a single thing about what is going on today....and that is exactly what I have witnessed.
So....on that walk.....yes the birds will still sing....and the mowers will still buzz....and the kids will still play....and the newest Netflix series will still air....until the wars start....and then it will all change....and you will be pouring through your Bible to make sense of it all....looking for oil to add to your lamp....and wondering why your decades of faithful attendance at church didn't grandfather you in?
