We have....in the church....lost the grace of meekness. We chose instead the brute force of Jehu....vicariously of course....for we ourselves do not pound on the door of the immigrant.....and haul him away in front of his family....nor do we call in the civil servant....fire them....and order security to escort them to the door....nor do go to the black person....and point off in the distance....and give directions to where they can find their low-income housing. We are not present when an elderly person puts the roast beef back in the grocery store freezer....and instead picks up a pound of bologna....or when the doctor tells the patient that their medicine is no longer covered by Medicare. We don't even think about these things when we walk as a tourist around our nation's capital....admiring the improvements in the parks....or the new ballroom being built....or triumphal tower.
The honored Puritan pastor Thomas Watson wrote that...."meekness is opposed to malice"....and that...."malice is the devil's picture"....that it is...."mental murder"....and...."unfits for duty"...."how can such a man pray?"....and that meekness is also...."opposed to revenge"....that malice is...."vermin that lives on blood."
We no longer know how to forgive....or even to forget. We have....as in the letter in Revelation to the church in Ephesus....'left our first love'.....and in Jude....."...run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit"....and we have done all of this....in the name of God....offering praises that He has no use for....and sacrifices that are a stench in His nostrils.
