I hesitate to admit this....but for over thirty years I have played a kind of license plate game while on long drives. I kid you not. It's an addiction. I can be in conversation....or listening to a sermon....but when a car passes....(they all pass me)....I glance down at the license plate. I can recognize most states from thirty or forty yards....even in the rear-view mirror! My goal is thirty states from Pittsburgh to the beach. Trucks don't count....nor business vehicles of any kind....and no counting parked cars in the service area....that's cheating!
Well....a thought came to me tonight as I headed out on a short thirty minute drive. I think that it may have potential. I noticed a street sign off to my left....Karcher Avenue. It brought to mind a good friend that I had by that name decades ago. So I prayed for him....wherever he might be....God knows. Then came....Bedford Street. Thirty-five years ago I was on a short term mission trip to Paraguay....and the Assembly of God pastor and a couple other young people were from Bedford, Pa.....just off the Pennsylvania Turnpike. So I thought of them....all good memories....and prayed as best as I could for someone I had not seen in over three decades.
Now I am driving....and I can't see every single street sign....but down the road a little was Williams Avenue. I have had many friends with that last name....but the thought of one particular man makes me smile. I had watched him become born again. We worked together but lived in different states. I advised him on trying to find a church....which he did. This man was well-liked....and always spoke his mind. He knew that I would be interested....so he told me that when he was introduced to the pastor....he came right out and asked...."Are you born again?" My friend died a few years after that....but he has a son out there somewhere....the age of our son....so I prayed for that young man....hoping that I might get to meet him someday. I would have a few things to tell him of his father's faith.
There were a lot of streets with first names....and it was easy to find a prayer for....Helen Street....and Laura Drive....and there were a couple a bit difficult if not impossible....Baba Looey Lane for one!
Anyway....my first impression of this idea has been good! I liked the memories part....and I loved the praying part. You might want to try this yourself....just look at various street signs and see if someone or something comes to mind that you offer up a prayer for!
