I had to do a little research here. It was the late 80s....and there was a popular brand of denim jeans called....No Excuses. In the one television commercial....the celebrity model had only one line...."I have no excuses....I only wear them."
Adam had an excuse...."The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate." Genesis 3:12
Jesus told the parable of a great supper....this one recorded in Luke 14....where many were invited....but many also came up with excuses not to go....they had to take care of their property or their animals or their family. So...many of us are sitting here in comfort....fancy jobs....a well-earned retirement....or maybe in academia....with a lot of big plans....in essence declining the same invitation.
Focusing on the gospel here....this is where the invitation is extended to go out and get everyone to come in....in other words....the man who comes to fix the billionaire's toilet....may have eternal life....but the busy billionaire doesn't.
Here is an excuse for you....if you tweak the correct interpretation....'the Bible says that we are not to know the day or the hour.' Here's another....'the Bible says....do not judge.' We might as well be saying....in the same vein....as the celebrity in the commercial....'I don't make excuses....I just find them in the Bible.'
We have come to the point today on the Lord's return....that there are no excuses. Paul writes in Romans about....all we have to do is look around us at creation and we will see the work of a creator. There were and are no excuses here. Well...as for Jesus coming again....in power and glory and with righteous judgment....all we have to do is look around at this world....at the reborn state of Israel....with enemies all around it....and all the violence that is everywhere as in the days of Noah....and the earth and cosmos....shaking and roiling....and the demonic rising....and delusion even within the ranks of evangelicals....and although we may not admit it....God is showing us that there are no excuses for not seeing the warnings.
