It was in the very beginning of the prophet's ministry that God told Jeremiah that judgments were coming....and although those prophesies of judgment were detailed over fifty-two chapters....God's summary of why the judgments were coming....this in the first chapter....was short and sweet.....and succinct....Because they have forsaken Me.....Jerusalem and Judah turned away from trusting in their God....Burned incense to other gods....their hope now being in effect their prayers....incense....offered to other gods such as money and power....And worshiped the works of their own hands....as their treasures in life were now materialistic...their pleasures being their treasures.
God continued this message in the second chapter.....to Judah and to Israel....as everyone had become idolators....including those supposedly ministering to God....and the leaders. God yet again summarized the situation....For My people have committed two evils....They have forsaken Me...the fountain of living waters....And hewn themselves cisterns-broken cisterns that can hold no water.There is a message for us in the third chapter if we would but consider it. Israel can be likened to the 'left' in America.....and Judah to the 'right.' The Democrat Party fell fast and hard and first. We watched this with great dismay to say the least....but then`we fell also....Yet her treacherous sister did not fear....but went and played the harlot also....only pretending to have become God-fearing....as the words in Jeremiah 3:10 described it....and then here is the real kicker in the very next verse....Backsliding Israel has shown herself more righteous than treacherous Judah.
Folks....as bad as the other side of the political divide in America has been....and it was and is indeed bad.....and we knew it.....and called them out for it for decades.....in spite of this.....we have fallen further then they had. We make them look almost good today! You can see this in how we destroyed the efforts to hold the line on the coronavirus....and you can see it in the pure hypocrisy of not holding those involved in the January 6 violent insurrection accountable. To top all this off....not only did we get taken in by a genuine biblical false prophet in Trump.....but after it should have became obvious to all who he really is....we doubled-down in support of him....letting him change us into what he has always been!
So that is where we are....but God continues to say to us in verses 3:11 & 13.....only acknowledge your iniquity....that you have transgressed against the LORD your God....and I will give you shepherds according to my heart who will feed you with knowledge and understanding. We do not have the shepherds today folks....but God will give them to us.....if we humble ourselves....acknowledge our culpability....and finally turn back to God....not in "pretense"....but heartfelt remorse.
